(Yicai) Dec. 5 -- Rescuers are searching for 13 workers who went missing after a railroad construction site in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen collapsed late yesterday.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, the city government said today. Residents living nearby were evacuated in a timely manner, and traffic was temporarily redirected to surrounding roads, it added.
The accident happened on a section of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway, a high-speed link connecting Shenzhen and Jiangmen in Guangdong province.
According to the authorities, the project is owned by the Guangdong branch of Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway and is being built by China Railway Fourth Bureau Group.
The Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway has seven stations along its 116.1-kilometer stretch and is designed to take trains traveling at speeds of up to 250 km per hour. Work on the Pearl River Estuary Tunnel began in July 2020, while construction of the rest the line started in October 2022.
