(Yicai) Sept. 19 -- Xiaomi Auto, the carmaking arm of Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi, will recall nearly one-third of the SU7 it has delivered to address safety issues related to its advanced driver-assistance system.

From today, Xiaomi Auto will recall 116,887 SU7 standard version produced between Feb. 6, 2024, and Aug. 30, 2025, to perform an over-the-air update and provide a free software upgrade to eliminate safety risks, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced today.

The vehicles in question have defects in the recognition, warning, and handling of certain extreme and special scenarios when the navigate on autopilot function is enabled, the SAMR noted, adding that if the driver does not intervene promptly, this may increase the risk of collisions, posing a safety hazard.

In March, a serious traffic accident occurred involving an SU7 with the NOA function activated on a highway, resulting in the deaths of all three occupants. When the car detected a temporary roadblock because of road construction, the system issued a warning. The driver took control of the vehicle but could not complete the evasive maneuver in time.

This incident drew widespread public concern about the safety risks associated with smart vehicles’ ADAS and raised questions about some automakers’ exaggerated promotion of their NOA functions. It also attracted regulators’ attention.

On Sept. 17, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a draft for public consultation on safety standards for intelligent vehicle ADAS. The draft lists detailed technical requirements for ADAS functions across various scenarios and multiple testing scenarios, including a highway construction case similar to the one the SU7 was involved in.

Xiaomi Auto launched its first model, the SU7, in March last year, with a starting price of CNY215,900 (USD30,360). By Aug. 31, the firm had delivered more than 300,000 units.

In January, Xiaomi Auto conducted an OTA recall to upgrade the intelligent parking assistance system on about 30,000 SU7 standard model to eliminate safety risks.
