Tencent Restarts WeChat Signups After Security Upgrade(Yicai Global) Aug. 5 -- Tencent Holdings has re-enabled new user registrations on WeChat, China's biggest instant messaging platform, after suspending signups for over one week.
WeChat said on July 27 that registration of new personal and public accounts would be suspended as a security upgrade was underway, and that registration would be reinstated in early August.
Tencent’s shares have fallen over 17 percent since July 26, when China’s market regulator ordered the internet giant to give up its exclusive music copyrights to restore market competition. The stock has also come under pressure from government efforts to stem gaming addiction among young users and tighten data security rules.
The shares [HKG:0700] closed down 3.9 percent today at HKD439 (USD56.40) each, giving the Shenzhen-based company a market capitalization of HKD4.21 trillion (USD541.3 billion).
WeChat's Chinese and overseas monthly active users totaled 1.2 billion as of March 31, up 3.3 percent from a year earlier, according to Tencent's first-quarter earnings report.
