Foreign Agencies May Fund China's Mega-Collider, Chief Designer Says(Yicai Global) Nov. 26 -- China's plan to build the world's biggest particle smasher has raised interest from overseas governments, according to the mastermind behind the project.
"They [international investors] are all interested, but they need to get endorsement from their funding agencies," science publication Nature reported on Nov. 23, citing Wang Yifang, the director of Beijing's Institute of High Energy Physics.
If the necessary CNY30 billion (USD4.3 billion) funding is secured, the Circular Electron–Positron Collider will be ready in 2030 and it may help answer so-far unanswered physics questions. The 100-kilometer facility would become more than three times as big as the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, and cost about half of the price.
The Chinese government has helped to fund the research and development, but the design team wishes to garner overseas support to raise some of the funds to build the particle accelerator.
