DQ to Start Ice Cream Take-Outs in China This Summer DQ to Start Ice Cream Take-Outs in China This Summer

(Yicai Global) May 6 -- Chinese consumers are about to enjoy Dairy Queen ice cream at home through the firm's new take-away service starting this summer.

The company is developing a hard-packed ice cream and launching new business lines amid the rapid development of China's food delivery sector, DQ Chief Executive Troy Bader told Sina Finance on May 4.

The ice cream to-go set for sale this summer can be ordered in-store or online, Bader added.

Edina, Minnesota-based DQ, which is a unit of Warren Buffet's Berkshire-Hathaway,  is expected to open its 1,000th store in China in mid-year, Bader continued, noting it only had 500 stores before last year. It opened its 800th or so store at the year's end and has cut the ribbon on 194 thus far this year.

DQ has extended its offering in step with this expansion. It added tea and fruit smoothies in a key business decision, since its most popular product now is its Okinawa Brown Sugar Smoothie. Drinks greatly contribute to sales, especially in China, where tea remains all the rage, even with the inroads coffee has made in recent years.

The chain already serves hot dogs, chicken wings, chicken legs and fries, but also wants to lay out even more in the way of snacks, as these are a big part of sales, Bader said.
