(Yicai Global) Sept. 16 -- Units of China's State Grid and tech giant Huawei Technologies are linking up to improve electric car charging technologies and infrastructure, 21st Century Business Herald reported.

State Grid EV Service and Huawei Digital Power will collaborate in three major technical fields, namely, high-power direct-current fast charging, a user-friendly smart grid and an internet of vehicles platform, said Jia Junguo, chairman of State Grid Smart Energy Transportation Technology Innovation Center Suzhou.

China already has the most charging piles in the world at 1.42 million as of the end of September last year. However, the infrastructure has problems, said Kuang Ping, general manager of the smart charging field of Huawei Digital Energy. Fast charging points are not fast enough, there aren’t enough slow charging points and they are poorly constructed.

All parties need to work together to keep up with the development needs of electric vehicles, Kuang said.

The State Grid’s smart charging network, which helps link charging station companies with electric car users, is connected to around one million charging piles and serves 5.5 million owners of zero-emission autos, the firm said in November last year. It comprises fast-charging stations on freeways, urban public charging points, public transport charging station, private community piles and shore power supply at ports.
