(Yicai Global) Nov. 29 -- Chinese electric vehicle startup Nio and internet behemoth Tencent Holdings are joining forces to speed up the development and adoption of intelligent driving.

Under their agreement, Tencent will provide Nio with cloud computing capabilities, the Shanghai-based car firm said yesterday. They will jointly build a cloud server that can support autonomous driving data storage at an exabyte scale with an access efficiency of one million queries per second to boost research and development of self-driving technology, Nio added.

Shenzhen-based Tencent will also provide Nio with intelligent driving mapping services for high-precision navigation. Using Tencent’s rich digital entertainment content and internet services, Nio can also create a personalized on-board assistance platform, it added.

Tencent is a leader in a wide range of digital fields, and the tie-up promotes efficient integration of resources between the two parties and deep cooperation in core technology areas of smart cockpit and autonomous driving, said Nio founder and Chief Executive Li Bin.

Transport is a key area of Tencent's internet layout. According to the internet giant, it is working with more than 100 car companies and travel technology firms in the fields of connected vehicles, autonomous driving, cloud services, and location services.

In the first 10 months of this year, Nio's electric vehicle deliveries jumped 32 percent to 92,493 from a year earlier, bringing the total number to 260,000 since 2014, the firm's latest data showed.
