(Yicai) Nov. 30 -- German auto giants BMW and Mercedes-Benz are joining forces to set up an electric car fast-charging network in China to meet growing consumer demand for advanced charging services.
The two firms plan to build at least 1,000 fast-charging stations equipped with the latest technology in China by the end of 2026, BMW said today, citing an announcement made by their China units BMW Brilliance Automotive and Mercedes-Benz Group China.
An equally-owned joint venture will be formed to operate the network, it added, without disclosing any financial details. The deal is still pending regulatory approval.
The first batch of charging stations will be built in parts of the country where electric cars are popular and should be ready as early as next year, the Munich-based company said. The network will then be spread across the country. It will use electricity generated from renewable sources wherever feasible, to offer a sustainable and eco-friendly service.
Although the charging network will be available to all members of the public, BMW and Mercedes Benz customers will have privileges such as online reservations and plug and charge services for an enhanced experience, it added.
