(Yicai) Feb. 23 -- Xiaomi has denied rumors that its new electric car, due to start deliveries next month, includes a Beijing license plate that has a waiting list of millions. Customers should refer to the terms and conditions of Xiaomi Auto's pricing, delivery and sales policies, the Chinese tech giant said today.
Xiaomi is likely to gift each buyer of its first electric car, the SU7, with a Beijing license plate if they don’t already have one, according to rumors circulating on social media today, citing a veteran member of staff with close relations to co-founder and Chairman Lei Jun.
“Beijing’s traffic management bureau has received no such notification,” Shangyou News reported, citing a person working in the bureau.
Beijing holds a regular auction that offers a limited number of license plates in order to control the number of new vehicles that come onto the roads. Although they are free, the bidding success rate is extremely low at between 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent, with more than two million people vying for the 20,000 license plates made available each year.
The SU7 will start mass production in mid to late February, 36Kr reported last month. Around 2,000 autos are set to be produced in March, and capacity will increase each month to reach 10,000 units in July.
