(Yicai Global) Aug. 10 -- Biren Technology has launched its first graphics processing unit chip which boasts a peak hash rate higher than US chip giant Nvidia's products, the Chinese semiconductor startup said today.

The BR100 series has 7 nanometer chips with 16-bit floating point and 8-bit fixed-point computer power that ran reach maximum speeds of over 1000 T and 2000 T respectively, Biren said. California-based Nvidia’s comparable chips are up to 624 T and 1248 T.

The BR100 series and its supporting hardware will start mass production at the end of the year, co-founder and President Xu Lingjie told Yicai Global. The Shanghai-based firm is co-operating with several server manufacturers, including cloud computing and Big Data services provider Inspur, he added.

Biren has raised more than CNY5 billion (USD740 million) since it was set up in 2019. Its B-series round in March last year was led by insurance giant Ping An Insurance, investment firm Country Garden Venture Capital and Hong Kong real estate giant New World Development.

GPU chips, originally used in game image processing, have been widely applied in emerging fields with high computing power requirements in recent years due to their high-performance parallel computing capabilities, such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Nvidia’s long-running dominance in the global GPU sector is under challenge. US tech behemoth Intel launched an AI chip called Gaudi2 in May developed by its Israeli unit Habana Lab.
