Most of Northern China’s Sandstorms Come From Mongolia, Report Says Most of Northern China’s Sandstorms Come From Mongolia, Report Says

(Yicai Global) May 18 -- Northern China has experienced 12 dust storms so far this year, the most in the past decade, and the main source of loose sand is coming from across the border with Mongolia, according to a recent study released by the journal of Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.

Mongolia accounted for 42 percent of the dust particles contained in sandstorms in northern China in March and April, according to research done by a team led by Huang Jianping, academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at Lanzhou University.

And the Taklamakan desert in northwest China is the second biggest source of loose sand at 26 percent, according to the research team, which used the Weather Research and Forecasting Model Coupled With Chemistry, the HYSPLIT model and dynamic dust sources to analyze the main origins of dust concentrations in northern China in March and April.

A cold high-pressure center, a cold front, and a Mongolian cyclone resulted in the transportation of loose sand from Mongolia and the Taklamakan desert to northern China, it said.
